The Emerson club – which grew out of the former Franklin chess team, took first with 13 points over Dominion Middle School of Columbus, Ohio with 11 points, Barker Middle School of Michigan City, Indiana with 11 points, and Serrett Classical Academy with 10.5 points.
Robert Riddle led the 7th grade team by finishing 6th in the nation, scoring 5 out of 6 points. Rounding out the Emerson 7th grade team were Mark Rokita, Robby Rasmussen, and John Garrett Piergalski, each with 4 points, and Ed Mueller and Bill Bielski each with 3.5 points. Team scores are calculated by combining the top three individual scores.
