Caveman Finish
1st in National Championship
Cavemen Take
Top Honors in 7th Grade, Two Players Excel
 | Oakbrook, IL 1998: Over 1,455 players from 32 states competed in the K-12
National Grade Championships held December 4-6 in Oakbrook at the Hyatt Hotel. Taking top
honors in 7th grade were the Emerson Middle School Caveman.
The Emerson club which grew out of the former Franklin chess team, took first with
13 points over Dominion Middle School of Columbus, Ohio with 11 points, Barker Middle
School of Michigan City, Indiana with 11 points, and Serrett Classical Academy with 10.5
points. |
 | Robert Riddle led the 7th grade team by finishing 6th in the
nation, scoring 5 out of 6 points. Rounding out the Emerson 7th grade team were
Mark Rokita, Robby Rasmussen, and John Garrett Piergalski, each with 4 points, and Ed
Mueller and Bill Bielski each with 3.5 points. Team scores are calculated by combining the
top three individual scores. |
 | Daniel Leung, also of Emerson, finished in 4th place in the nation in 6th
grade by scoring 5 out of 6 points. Daniel had an outside shot at first place throughout
the last round of the tournament. Joining Daniel in 6th grade was Daniel Widing
with 3.5 points. |

Chess Club took 25 players to the tournament in grades ranging from Kindergarten through
freshman in High School, because the club serves a chess club to all of District 64 and to
former club members who now attend area high schools. Other schools represented at the
event included Lincoln, Washington, Franklin, and Main South High School |
